A mass shooting in Monterey Park Saturday night left at least 10 people dead and 10 wounded, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

Sgt. Bob Boese of LASD confirmed they are investigating a shooting in the area near Garvey and Garfield Avenues.

The alleged gunman was found dead in a white pickup truck in the city of Torrance, apparently after shooting himself, according to authorities.

The shooting was reported at approximately 10:22 p.m. in the 100 block of W. Garvey Avenue, LASD reported after an event was held to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

The 10 victims were identified as only five men and five women, according to Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Chief Robert Luna during a news conference Sunday.

The victims are believed to have ranged from 50 to 60 years of age.

The gunman was identified as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran.

When officers arrived at the scene Saturday, they found several people fleeing a ballroom, Capt. Andrew Meyer of the LASD Homicide Bureau said during a news conference early Sunday.

Meyer said when officers arrived at the scene around 10:30 p.m. people were screaming as they ran out of the ballroom and several victims were found in the parking lot.

On Sunday, Luna released images of the alleged shooter.

At least 10 people were pronounced dead at the scene and 10 others were transported to local hospitals in various conditions, ranging from stable to critical.

An hour before the shooting occurred, the city of Monterey Park was celebrating the Lunar New Year where thousands of people attended.

The celebration is an important event for the community and is considered one of the largest events in Southern California.

According to Police Department Chief Scott Weise, the event was canceled for Sunday because of the incident.

The motive for the shooting is still unknown.

Just a few kilometers from where the events occurred, another incident was reported in Alhambra.

According to authorities, the two incidents were related.

At a news conference Sunday afternoon, Luna confirmed that the gunman was present at another ballroom in Alhambra, Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio.

The people inside that study managed to disarm the gunman, preventing another tragedy.

Several law enforcement agencies continue to work on this investigation, including the FBI.

Monterey Park is located in the San Gabriel Valley, about 10 miles from downtown Los Angeles.
